Tell us about yourself
Detroit born, Emory Lawerence is an actor currently residing in Los Angeles. He got started in the acting world and caught the bug in 2005, when he was casted in his first stage play called LOVE IS. As of the last few years, he's been in about 20 films.
Emory sat down with us and here's how the interview went:
Q: Emory, darling, your performances in Tubi movies have been captivating! How do you choose your roles to slay on screen?
Well, thank you! I specifically choose roles that allow me to showcase my range. There's a process where I analyze if I'll get better as an actor and will it impact me as a man. Also, since Hollywood is so over-saturated, I look for roles that will help me stand out. All I want to do is get better with every single project.
Q: You've portrayed a diverse range of characters in the past year. How do you prepare for such varied roles, and do you have a favorite character you've played recently?
My preparation starts with research. First, I look at the time that the story took place. Then, research the subject matter in the story, followed by analyzation of how I see the character and how I can bring it to life.
Currently, my favorite role that I've played is Melvin Colbert from the movie "Corruption". The reason why is because I was a district attorney who wanted to be Robin Hood in a sense. His approach to life was to always do the right thing while fighting for those who didn't have the means to do so. He was dope!
Q: What motivates and inspires you as an actor, and how do you keep your passion for the craft, especially when taking on multiple roles in a short period?
My motivation comes from wanting to showcase to my son that "Anything is possible”. I want him to know that he can do anything. And also, to prove to myself that nothing is impossible.
Since he watches my every move, I know he's studying me. My confidence boosts his confidence, along with me knowing that this is my purpose. I tell stories on film that people can be inspired by.
Q: We've seen you bring depth and soul to your characters. Can you share a role that truly touched your spirit and why it resonated with you so deeply? Good or bad.
The role of Lance in "I'm in Love with a Stripper" resonated with me on many levels because he never let his faith waver. His dedication to God was unmatchable and he was proud of it. The character itself helped inspire me in my everyday life because that's what I strive to be, a consistent man of God. A soldier.
Q: In a world full of noise and distractions, how do you stay grounded and focused on your goals as an actor and as a man on a mission to conquer life as a whole?
God, it's that simple and plain. Do I get distracted? Yes. But, do I learn from those distractions? Yes. My focus comes from my gut feeling of knowing that this is my assignment. And also, that I know I'm special, I know I'll be tested. And I stay prepared and focused because I always want to be prepared. And again, my son is my reason.
Q: As a father, how do you balance the glitz and glamour of Hollywood with the responsibilities of fatherhood? Any secret tips for our daddies out there?
Hahaha, I balance it by reminding myself that my mistakes will affect him in the long run. I can't live as wreckless as I once did because I have a lot to lose, and I can't jeopardize that. Becoming a father helped me see the world through a different lens. I acknowledged that my purpose was bigger than just myself. I know I'm special, and I don't take that for granted.
Q: Emory, with your busy schedule and all those red carpets to strut, do you have time for a special lady in your life? Or are you too busy stealing hearts on-screen?
Hahaha these questions are hilarious. No, I'm single. I'm at a place in my life where I'm focused on healing and keeping my mental health balanced. Healing is a journey in itself and I take it seriously. I don't want to just jump into a relationship without properly caring and loving myself first. I grew up without a father and there are a lot of wounds that were created. The last thing I want to do is bleed on someone who's trying to love me. I'm currently emotionally irresponsible.
Q: Being a Black man in the entertainment industry can be a rollercoaster ride. How do you navigate the ups and downs while staying true to yourself and your craft?
I constantly remind myself that I control everything. I can't expect things to always go my way. But what I can do is learn, observe, and adapt while staying true to myself.
Q: Emory, honey, let's get real! What's your guilty pleasure when you're not busy lighting up the screen? Are there any binge-worthy shows or must-have snacks?
My guilty pleasure is being home alone sitting in the dark while watching "The Sopranos", "The Wire", "Entourage" and "First 48" reruns lol. All while eating a bunch of nonsense!
Q: As a father, what values do you strive to instill in your children through your work and presence in the industry? We want to know how you're raising the next generation of kings and queens!
Hard work trumps everything. You lose everything the same way you reach it. Be wise. And always stay true to yourself.
Q: Emory, you exude confidence and style both on and off the screen. How do you define your brand and keep it fresh in the ever-changing world of entertainment?
I just wear what I like and what looks good on me. I don't try to mimic anyone, I honestly wear what looks good on me. Fun fact: I'm not into fashion at all. I hate shopping for anything. Lol
Q: Emory, your presence commands attention wherever you go! How do you use your platform to uplift and inspire other Black men in the industry and beyond?
By the way, I carry myself. Self-respect is a big deal to me. We are our walking billboards, we have to display something worth looking at. And also, the display of integrity at all times.
Q: Looking ahead, are there any specific types of roles or stories you're eager to explore in the future, and why?
That's a good question. I want to do an action or sports movie while I can still use some of this athleticism. Lol, I'm not getting any younger.
Q: What makes you stand out in this industry?
Simply, I don't compete. I focus on being the best version of myself. And also, I view this as a marathon. It's a sprint. It's all about learning the biz and more about myself along the way.
