Welcome to Love Made Simple, a written series brought to you by Cliff Hangar. In the coming weeks, I will introduce readers to the “Puzzle Principle.” The Puzzle Principal is a self-help guide for those looking beyond dating to the real possibility of marriage.
I believe the concept of the Puzzle Principal was born of divine inspiration. While studying the scriptures, the Holy Spirit began to press upon me the need for couples to truly understand and grasp the concept of becoming one. Most know the scripture found in Genesis 2:24: “Therefore, shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” It was not until I became an ordained pastor conducting marriage counseling that I began to grasp the importance of this scripture to marriage. In counseling sessions and personal study, I grew to believe that despite God stressing the importance of unity in marriage, many believed or operated as if becoming one would occur with no effort.
In today’s world, the options available to meet people are staggering. According to internet sources, the online dating industry will reach 370.1 million users, and nearly 22 percent of spouses are now meeting online. The wind of change is never more prevalent than in the world of dating. Gone are the good old days when the only way to meet someone was face to face at the local coffee shop, grocery store, or other such places. Today, we live in a world in which you can, as the young people say, “slide into DMs,” and text messages, social media platforms, and dating apps are all acceptable and widely used to meet people to find that diamond in the rough.
When the initial meeting ignites a spark and emotions erupt, the joy found in seeing, talking to, and spending time with this person can, at times, prohibit or hinder our ability or willingness to see major red flags. Once the sparks begin to fly, many people fail to have the deep conversations required to determine if the spark can become a flame and the flame burn a lifetime amid the storms and challenges of life. Failure to have critical discussions and differences can lead to prolonged relationships that end in gut-wrenching breakups.
The Puzzle Principal is a concept and not a guarantee. In the world of love, there are no guarantees. The Puzzle Principal will help people look beyond initial sparks and have discussions to determine if their relationship is sustainable. A part of the Principal Puzzle is the completion of an actual puzzle. The puzzle visually represents the growing bond, highlights concerns, and illustrates the unity of the couple. As a part of the puzzle principal, you should complete a written document used as a road map for the success of the relationship; engagement; and hopefully, marriage.
The written document is not a tool to beat your partner over the head if they fall short of something agreed upon. It is a map, and if a couple lose their way in the relationship, this map will provide them with directions to get the relationship back on the road to success determine their willingness as a person and potential couple to identify, address, and resolve differences can lead to prolonged relationships that end in gut-wrenching
breakups.
